About University

The University of Bristol is a large research university located in the city centre (and county) of Bristol, United Kingdom. It is renowned for its medical and scientific research and has produced a number of Nobel Prize winners, including Paul Dirac and Hans Bethe. The university is one of the "red brick universities", along with its contemporaries, and is a founding member of the Russell Group , a group of research universities in the United Kingdom. The university is also a member of the Coimbra Group , a group of ancient European higher education institutions.

The University of Bristol has a long history and an excellent academic reputation, as evidenced by its 21 Fellows of the Royal Society of Medicine, 13 Associate Members of the British Academy and 40 Members of the Royal Society. However, the university has a smaller student population than its neighbour, the University of the West of England.
